Somebody that I use to know - Gotye

Media Forms: What techniques does the extract use to establish the text’s genre and/or engage the audience?

The video is completely different to other normal video’s nowadays and this can be shown by the way the video starts off with a man who is topless who seems upset and then random lines pop up which gives the audience no idea what is going on, the lines start to get filled with different colours on the background as well as on the main person which represents the body parts, the lyrics ‘she didn’t have to cut me up’ which suggests that this song is about his relationship. Different shots are been shown throughout the video to show the painting on the body, close ups have been used a lot to show his facial expressions and how he feels.

In the middle of the video it starts to zoom out from the scene which then shows the audience a female which could indicate that she might be his ‘love’ who is also painted and then another shot is been used which is a close up of the main person and the women.  At the end of the video the painting on the female is slowly coming off which suggests that he does not like her and she is not connected to her in anyway, this engages the audience as this is never been used before and the use of bright colours attracts an audience as this is eye catching and brilliantly used well throughout the video. High key lighting have been used throughout the whole extract to give it more attention with the viewers.

The video uses a variety of instruments and the main instrument that catches the audience’s attention is the xylophone which is usually not heard in the modern music today, the xylophone is used 20seconds in the beginning and the last 25seconds in the end to give it a little touch which makes it sound more interesting as the beat is different and relaxing. The main person was looking directly at the screen which is a direct mode of address which shows that he is engaging with the audience.
