KONY 2012 - Question 1

How is KONY 2012 represented?

The video Kony 2012 is represented in many ways and this can be shown by the way many people around the world are encouraging each other to make Kony famous as this will get the word across about the things that are happening in northern Uganda, it is represented in a positive way to show how many people are actually taking part to solve this problem, Voice over is been used to engage the audience and this can be shown when it says ‘we’ the use of ‘we’ catches the audience’s attention as it uses techniques like direct mode of address in the voice over, It is a dominant male voice over which is the ‘voice of god’.

The American voice can include the hegemonic values as the dominant ideology that promotes the people who are in control of the society which targets the audience and actively engages them. In the beginning of the video it anchors the meaning by the way they talk and show pictures and clips about his baby which gives a relation with the audience and the narrator itself as it gives them a chance to trust and get to know him personally.

This is targeted at the different ethnic groups as they are all working together to protect the children from harm and this is been shown worldwide to prevent children from getting hurt and kidnapped. The hypodermic needle theory can link to KONY 2012 by the way the media are injecting information into the audience to engage with them as there can try attracting the audience to help and sort the problem out, however a close up of the word ‘share’ on the Youtube site makes the audience share the video and talk about it, as they use titles which makes it informative. The shots that are been used frequently is the close ups as this shows the emotions, especially on the child’s face and the women giving birth as it is the point of view shot which is getting the audience involved and emotionally attached as powerful emotions are being shown.
