Super 8 Cross Media Platform Questions

 2. How are texts in the three platforms constructed?

Super 8 has been promoted through print as this includes the Super 8 poster’s, this helps promote the film as it targets their audience, the main characters in the movie are teenagers who are trying to save Alice and to find the ‘alien’ that has been disrupting the whole town, this connects with the movie as the target audience is children and teenagers, the main cast in the movie is also teenagers which relates with one another. There is also super8 movie news which talks about the release of the movie and a review about the movie, it also lets the audience know about the special features and behind the scenes of the movie as this helps promote super8.

Super 8 can include trailers for the movie as this helps to promote super 8 and lets the audience to have an opportunity to see how the movie will be like as it gives the audience a mystery of what the alien is and looks like. There is a theatrical theatre which show clips about the movie, however there is also a TV trailer which is for 30 seconds as it shows small clips of the movie. Broadcast can also include interviews with the members of the cast, the director and producer as it lets them talk about the film ‘super 8’ and how it was during the film.

The Super 8 official website has the trailer of the movie as soon as you go on to the website; it also shows the Blu-ray and DVD of the movie as this helps with the promoting, it gives the audience a chance to buy the movie on a low price and also shows the features of the movie. This also has a Super 8 app for I phones which is free as this helps promote the movie, it lets the audience get involved with the app as this includes a free video which lets people record stuff as the way the children in the movie were making the own scary movie. However this can also include online games for super 8, the recent game ‘portal 2’ has a surprise which includes a feature of super8 which is an interactive game which can be moved around the area in the game, just like the movie.

The main characters in the movie are ‘Joe lamb’, Charles, Preston, martin, Cary and Alice, Gabriel Basso who plays ‘Martin’ in Super8 has starred in the recent television program called ‘The Big C’. Gabriel Basso is a film actor as well as a television actor, and also had small roles in programs. Zach Mills who plays ‘Preston’ has been in many films like ‘The Santa Claus 3: The escape Claus’ and ‘Mr.Magorium’s Wonder Emporium’ and many others.

E-media can include Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, on Facebook Super8 have their own official Facebook page where there have 579,761 people who have liked this page which implies that many people around the world have seen super8, this promotes the movie as many people like it, this also lets everyone comment on their wall for feedback or opinions which is useful. However Twitter have also got their official page where it lets everyone follow them as this targets their audience, gives them all a chance to know about super8, this includes the pictures from the cast members as well as the director and producer. 3. How do audiences access the text across the 3 platforms?

Super 8’s is mostly targeting their audience who is children and teenagers, this can be shown by the actual movie which has the main characters that are teenagers and are acted by teenagers, this relates to the target audience as J.J.Abrams and Steven Spielberg want their audience to know how the children in the movie are feeling as they are expressing their feelings throughout the film. This promotes the movie as more children and teenagers will be able to watch as it is targeted at them. However this can also be targeted at groups of families as the main characters in the movie are a family who have been suffering due to the loss of a family member, this would relate to their target audience.

Super 8 is promoted to its target audience through print as a larger audience is mostly families, this can include the older people in the family who prefer to read newspapers and magazine, information about the movie is usually written in side but there is no review overall as they will be in newspapers. The colour of the super8 poster have been using dark colours and dull colours which gives an enigma code, that something is going to happen, gives the audience a mystery of what the movie is about. Broadcasting can be promoted through TV to target their audience, such as on TV there are usually 30 second trailers which show a small clip about the movie which attracts the audience’s attention, this is because of the special effects that have been used, because of promoting this beforehand, and it gives the audience a chance to watch it in cinemas.

4. How are representations constructed across the 3 platforms?

The characters in the movie who are the children are represented by print, for example the movie reviews let everyone know how they are like and why they have acted like they should have done in the movie, for example J.J.abram and Steven Spielberg gave the children the bikes to keep which had been used for a shoot in the movie, they all had fun while they were playing, The children during the film inspired Steven Spielberg of the way they were as they were having fun.

Broadcast can include the interviews and the reviews, for example this changes the view if children nowadays and how they act, such as children have been represented as ‘gangsters’ the way they have their hoods up and act bad, but this movie represents the children in a completely different way as they are innocent and sensible. However E-media represents the children in also a good way, it sets a good example to the children these days as they are showing them to behave and act sensible the way the children are behaving in the movie.

The way the characters in the movie are presented is in a way that the children should be and the way they are setting an example of how children should remain, as the target audience is targeted at families it sets a good role to the children in the household to respect and behave themselves. The difference in the children in the movie is that it is more serious about making their ‘zombie movie’ but because they are stars they are more bubbly and confident the way they are speaking.    

5. What institutional issues are raised in the case study?

Promoting super8 is mainly Paramount pictures as this is a global producer and distributor of the entertainment of the movie, The three platforms are used to target their audience in many different ways for example print media is used with the magazines and newspapers for their audience to read about the information and news on the movie. Broadcast is used for the theatrical trailers and the TV 30 seconds trailer which promotes their audience. E-media targets their audience by Facebook and Twitter as they are social networking sites which give them a chance to target their audiences.

Some platforms work better than others, for example in my opinion I think that E-media and broadcast work better than Print, as it has a wider range of things that can target their audience and interact with the movie. Broadcast and E-media cooperate together by the way it targets their audience, for example broadcast includes reviews of the movie as well as E-media lets you access the reviews online on Youtube.

Review of Super8

Review of super8

Super8 is a film directed by J.J. Abram’s who has directed many different types of films, the ones that I have heard of are mostly ‘star trek’ and Mission: Impossible III, the genre for ‘Star trek’ is  action, adventure and sci-fi and Mission: Impossible III is action, adventure and thriller, most of his movies are a bit similar.

The main character in the movie in my opinion would be Joel Courtney who plays ‘Joe Lamb’ in the movie, however all of ‘Joe’s’ friends Charles,Preston,Martin and Cary are important as they each helped him to save Alice and solve the mystery behind everything that’s being strange after the crash with the train and truck in the beginning. Gabriel Basso plays ‘Martin’, who has been starring in the television program called ‘The Big C’, he is a television actor as well as a film actor.

The genre of this film is thriller and sci-fi, this movie makes you jump when the alien comes, this is because of the sounds that have been used throughout the movie, The sound is very powerful which makes the audience seem involved with the movie as it tells the audience that something is going to happen, an example of this can be in the beginning of the movie when the train crashes and everything explodes. This is aimed at children and teenagers mostly because the children in the movie are the main characters which relates to the whole movie.

Super8 is about a child ‘Joe Lamb’  whose mother passes away and has no close relationship with his father, his group of friends are trying to make a horror movie with zombies, there all meet up at midnight and go to the train station, while recording their scenes a truck comes from nowhere and crashes into the train, The train explodes everywhere and burns, there all go to the truck to see who it is  and see that the driver was their teacher from school, who was also an air force scientist, later on the air force get involved with the whole situation. After the incident weird things start happening to the town, people who live there, the dogs and the belongings of others start to disappear. However during the movie Alice gets captured by the alien when she runs away from home because of an argument with her father, later on the air force evacuates the whole town because of everything that has been happening. Joe finds out that Alice is missing and he takes his friends and goes back to school while creeping out so he is does not get caught, Joe later on realises that he might have seen the alien in the grave yard while he was visiting his mother’s grave, Joe and Cary both go to save Alice from the alien. While running away when finding Alice, the alien grabs Joe and Joe starts to talk to it like the air force scientist did, The alien puts down Joe and goes away to build his ship, it attracts all the metal things and also tries to take’s Joe’s mothers pendant which he has kept since his mother passed away, with him all the time, he pulls it towards him and then he lets go, the ship leaves and so does the alien.

What Went Well- I enjoyed the movie as it was interesting because the alien was not showed until later on in the movie, it gives the audience a  mystery of what the alien will be and looks like, It made me jump when the alien would appear or when it would abduct the characters throughout the movie, as it gives us  some sort of suspense.

Even Better If – It could have been better if the alien was made different because I thought it looked like a spider which was original, it could have been something different which could have shocked the audience.

Analyse 11 Images

Image 1: The main image is of a woman who is holding a cigarette in her hand which can imply that she could be the villain, the lighting of the image is low key lighting. However her hair is like how a boy would normally have it, which connotes masculine, which can be a threat to patriarchy. The smoky effect shows some sort of mystery which created the enigma codes as we don’t know who the women, the women is looking at the audience which can be shown as direct mode of address. This also is Femme Fatale which is a mysterious woman who would most likely trap her lovers/men by her attraction which signifies that she could be bad.

Image 2: The lighting of this image is Low key lighting which can be shown in the image as it is all black and dull. The woman is holding a cigarette which suggests that she is bad. The way she is looking up could suggest that she is worried and tensed for some reason.

Image 3:  The main image is of a man who has a crown and clothes which suggest that he might be a king and also shows that he is powerful. His facial expressions show that something is wrong and is troubling him.  All though his hands are close to him which might represent that he is protecting him as his hands are placed on his neck. The lighting of this image is high key to show the power and his magnificence of himself.

Image 4:  The angle the light is affecting is top lighting as this can be shown on the main image. The way he is standing, his posture shows that he is powerful. The badge that is on him connotes a man of law.  The pictures background is shady which suggests the person also might be shady, which can show that he might have a double personality.

Image 5: The image is of a woman who looks like she is getting attacked as this looks like the person is running away from something or someone which makes her the victim. The lighting is high key lighting as the way the image is bright which shows the facial expressions as she has seen someone, this can be shown by the way her eyes have widened, The harsh lighting shows what is going on. The mouth is open which could be a sense of terror.  The hand on the wall shows that she is trying to run or she is at a dead end, such as the wall.

Image 6: The image looks more natural by the way the image is taken. The way the image is laid out shows that they don’t want people to know about them, as they want them to be a secret, for example the way they are kissing and leaning on the blinds as the shadow is reflecting on them,  half-light and half dark. The lighting of this image is low key lighting.

Image 7: The lighting of this image is back lighting as this can be shown when the shadows of the four people who are walking towards the light, for example the shadows are shown as enigma codes as we don’t know who they are or what they are exactly doing.

Image 8: The lighting on the Image is low key as the image is dark, this can be shown by the shadow of the women, the women in the image looks terrified as she has seen something or someone. The background behind her looks like she is standing next to a wall or even in a house.

Image 9- The lighting of this image is high key lighting and the lights are shown on top which is also top lighting, the women in this image is praying which could imply that she is worried or praying for everything to be okay.

Image 10 - This image is a low angle shot as this is taken from the bottom of the staircase, the lighting is shown as low key, and this can imply that this is at night in the dark. The props that are being used is knifes and mask, the mask shows that the killer is trying to hide themselves which can be shown as sort of mystery as the audience are most likely to find out who it is and why they are killing innocent victims.

This image is of two people, which most likely looks like a couple, this can be shown by the way they are hugging and looking at each other. The image is shown as a high key lighting, however the shadows of the two people represents mystery, and a secretive affair. On the other hand the gun in the man’s hand implies that he could be a killer and is going to kill the women.

In the beginning the sound is like a heartbeat which is like an actual trailer, their trying to make it scary as the genre is horror. Outsider is mostly about a teenage girl who gets picked on by a couple of guys, this can be shown in the beginning of the trailer when she is in lesson and the boys throw paper at her, another clip is shown when she is in bed as she is turning sides while sleeping this shows that she cannot sleep because something is bothering her, however her top is ripped which gives the idea something has happened as she says ‘leave me alone’. she gets flashbacks of herself when she passes by bunch of guys she than gets followed by the same group of boys in an alleyway , it is shown that she is raped by the way they show one of the guys taking his belt off and undoes his zip of his trousers, this is an extreme close up to show the audience what is going on. Later on another clip is shown in an house with four of the boys sitting down, one after another there are killed by the girl who they raped, there die in different ways. She has white eyes and is wearing white clothes which imply that she is now a ghost. Many technical codes have been used for example one of them is camera shots as there have been used throughout the trailer which makes it look real and frightening, another one is colour this is for when the girl gets flashbacks the video goes black and white and it also starts to fade each time another clip is shown.
www- Their used many camera angles and camera shots which makes is stand out and flashbacks to show what has happened and what is bothering her.

The best year 13 production I thought was good was ‘call of duty’, this would mostly target teenage boys who play this game but watching this production was really funny, it included the animation of the game throughout the making, In the beginning of this production their used the part of the Call of duty game when its loading as there want it to show like the actual game, It also has a ‘kill cam’ exactly like the original game, when the player is killing the other players in the game there get points. A song is also played in the production which makes it funny as this attracts the audience. The subtitles at the bottom is mostly slang which implies that it is targeted at the teenage audience, group of teenage boys are included in this which shows that its targeted at them. The genre for this would be action because of the fighting and killing, comedy because it made us laugh and game because it is game which is being played.
